Melody A. Whitten, DVM

wallisville veterinarianDr. Melody A. Whitten—everyone calls her Dr. Mel—has been a general practitioner at Animal Care Clinic since 1995 and its owner since 2005.

A native of Christopher, Illinois, Dr. Mel says that her father played a significant role in helping her develop an early love for animals and then making the decision to pursue a veterinary career. “Growing up we always had a variety of animals, such as dogs, cats, horses, guineas, chickens, rabbits, goats, you name it,” she says. “And he was always bringing a new animal home, which reached the point where my mother frequently dreaded asking the question, ‘What’s in the box?’

“My father also taught me Proverbs 12:10, which says, ‘A righteous man cares for the life of his animals.’ Perhaps my favorite memory is of my father coming to me a few months before I graduated from veterinary school and saying, ‘You know, you’re doing something I always wanted to do and was never able to.’ That meant everything to me.”

For her undergraduate studies, Dr. Mel attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she received a Bachelor of Science in both Biology and Animal Science in 1987 and 1988 respectively. She then entered the University of Illinois’ College of Veterinary Medicine and received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. Her areas of special professional interest include preventative medicine, internal medicine, surgery and helping strengthen the human/animal bond. Dr. Mel is an active volunteer at the SAGA Humane Society in San Pedro, Belize where she donates her time, talents and supplies several times each year to perform spays, neuters and medical treatments for the animals housed in the shelter as well as pets belonging to the local residents. She is also a member of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Information Network.

Now that she is a practicing veterinarian and owns her own practice, Dr. Mel says she enjoys, “The satisfaction of working hard on a difficult case and eventually seeing the patient turn the corner and begin to improve. It is also gratifying to see how happy people are when you help make their beloved pet feel better.”

Dr. Mel and her husband Michael have a menagerie of animals that they provide a home to. These include a Black Lab named Molly, an Australian Shepherd named Paden, a Cocker Spaniel named Hannah, a mixed-breed dog named Widget that Dr. Mel and her husband rescued while in Belize, a cat named Marlo, and a quarter horse gelding named Doc.

The clinic also has a number of pets, which include three mixed breed dogs named Cosmo, Lilly and Onyx. The clinic is also home to four cats named McGee, Moose, Reeses, and Guyen.

Dr. Mel’s hobbies include SCUBA diving, traveling, theater, music, and constantly working to improve the clinic and boarding facilities.
